Where is the Global Energy Crunch Hitting Hardest?

Written by Christos Charalambous | September 30, 2026 | 3 minutes read

Global energy markets remain distorted by geopolitical disruptions, although the pressure is increasingly concentrated on specific fuels and transportation routes. Middle East supply constraints, Russian refinery disruptions, and bottlenecks across major shipping corridors have created an unusually complex physical market. Importantly, the system has avoided a more severe crude shortage partly through demand destruction rather than inventory depletion: global oil demand since March has run roughly 4.4 mb/d below last year, versus an inventory adjustment of around 2.9 mb/d.

Crude flows have proven surprisingly adaptable, but refined products remain considerably more disrupted. Middle East oil exports recently averaged 17.1 mb/d, only 6.1 mb/d below normal, as Saudi Arabia increasingly rerouted exports through Hormuz; Saudi exports recovered to roughly 5 mb/d by mid-September. However, this workaround requires scarce VLCC capacity, ship-to-ship transfers, and greater security coordination, making the supply chain more complex and vulnerable. The bigger dislocation is therefore no longer crude itself, but diesel and other refined products, where refinery outages and transportation constraints have driven margins sharply higher. LNG markets also remain vulnerable, as disruption to Middle Eastern exports could force Europe and Asia to compete more aggressively for Atlantic Basin and U.S. cargoes, particularly heading into winter.

Inventories still provide a cushion, but that cushion is becoming increasingly uneven. Only 555 million barrels of crude and products have been drawn during the disruption because governments and consumers have conserved stocks. However, U.S. commercial stocks are already near the bottom of their recent range, and the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) has fallen to roughly 285 million barrels, its lowest level since 1984. Roughly another 120 million barrels of OECD inventory could be released relatively comfortably, with China potentially supplying another 120 million barrels by year-end.

From an investment perspective, the key takeaway is that the energy shock is evolving from a simple crude-supply story into a refining and logistics story. The backdrop remains supportive of refiners, LNG exporters, and non-Middle Eastern producers, while unusually high diesel and transportation costs create a broader inflation risk. Gasoline prices feed directly into headline CPI, while diesel raises the cost of freight and goods delivery; crude oil affects the index mainly as an input to those finished fuels. For investor portfolios, energy equity exposure remains valuable as a hedge against geopolitical escalation and sticky inflation.
